Token boards are very effective in creating a visual schedule for students to go longer times/sittings without reinforcement. Token boards can be modified to include any number of tokens, and could be combined with different schedules of reinforcement.
Introducing the token board:
When introducing the token board to the student, start with all but one token on the board. Give a mastered task where the student's chance of getting correct is high. For example, "touch nose." Deliver token immediately and give the student specific praise, such as, "Nice, touching your nose!" Then, tell the student that he/she has all of the tokens. (It could be helpful to also point to the tokens while saying it.) This would be followed immediately by the student gaining access to whatever reinforcement he or she was working for. Reinforcement could include access to a tangible, delivery of an edible, or free time.
Tips to remember:
- Have replacement tokens on hand. They will get lost over time, especially in the classroom.
- Make sure that tokens are not accessible to students. This will help eliminate dishonesty.
- Pair presentation of the token with specific and enthusiastic praise. Ex: That's right! It is an apple!
- The student should earn all the tokens in a sitting, so that reinforcement is contacted. Especially in the beginning, short sittings are the key.
